Turbidites, basaltic lava, and pillow lavas are among the most common types of rock that make up the ranges on Vancouver Island. The Vancouver Island Ranges formed during the Cretaceous when a group of volcanic islands (the Insular Islands) collided with the coast of British Columbia. The Insular Mountains are west of the Canadian Coast Mountains and include the west coast islands, with the most commanding features of the Insular Mountains being the Vancouver Island Ranges and the mountains of Haida Gwaii. ![]() The Genevieve Range is one of the western subranges of Vancouver Island Ranges of the Insular Mountains. The Genevieve Range is situated on the remote and rugged west coast of the province and can be reached by floatplane, water taxi, or via the Nootka Island Trail. Unless a plane or boat is chartered most people travel from the community of Gold River on Vancouver Island to Yuquot (Friendly Cove) on Nootka Island. ![]() The range overlooks the Nuchatlitz Inlet from the south and across the inlet is the Sophia Range which covers the northern peninsula of the island.Īccess to the Genevieve Range typically starts with the trip to Nootka Island by ferry, floatplane, or a chartered boat. Located off the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, the Genevieve Range covers about 101 square kilometers (39 square miles) of Nootka Island. They have a very complex flavor with high brininess, a taste of nori, and a hint of anise on the finish.There are several unnamed peaks in the Genevieve Range with the tallest rising about 765 m (2,500 ft) above sea level however, the only named feature in the range is the 29 m (95 ft) tall Hixson Bluff which is on the northside of the island, overlooking Nuchatlitz Inlet Geography Noodka Sound Oysters have white meats with dark black mantles. I suspect that they were originally beach cultured and in more recent years are being tray cultivated. But The Oyster Guide says that the oysters he received appeared to be Tray Suspended and if so then they would look like the oysters posted on Oysterater (although they say the oysters are Beach Grown, the appearance is clearly Tray Suspended). The information I have says that they are a Beach Cultured oyster and the photo here supports that. The region is a series of fjords and known for its coastal rain forests, abundant wildlife, and sparseness of humankind. They are raised on the western side of Vancouver Island about two-thirds of the way up the coastline in an area which is rumored to have little more than a single logging road for access. Nootka Sound Oysters are among the most remotely cultured oysters in North America. ![]()
